________
Dungse Pema Rinpoche was born in Tsum, a Himalayan region on the Nepal—Tibet border, into a family of accomplished Buddhist practitioners descending from the lineage of the great 13th-century Nyingma master Guru Chowang. He is the eldest son of Lama Pema Lapchen Rinpoche and the 25th-generation lineage holder of the Ngak Labrang tradition.
At the age of nine, he entered Thrangu Tashi Choling Monastery in Boudhanath, Kathmandu. He received novice monk vows in 1983 and full Gelong Bhikshu ordination in 1989 from the Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche.
In 2003, Thrangu Rinpoche sent Dungse Pema Rinpoche to Vancouver, Canada, to support and teach at his Dharma centre. Today, he continues to share the teachings of Buddhism internationally and presently serves as the Abbot of Canada Thrangu Monastery in Vancouver. On the first day, June 13, we will gather for theAkshobia group practice in the morning and receive the Akshobia empowerment in the afternoon.
Akshobhya literally means “unshakeable.” One of Akshobhya’s great vows is to never become angry until reaching enlightenment. Because of this, we turn to Akshobhya Buddha to calm our anger or negative emotions, of ourselves or others. He can help calm the anger of others, pacifying violence, war, and fighting. He can calm and sooth our own minds.
The empowerment which will be bestowed by Dungse Rinpoche in the afternoon could be understood as making an auspicious connection with Akshobhya and permission to do the practice, or it could be taken as a blessing. The main point is for all of us to put effort into protecting our own mind streams from aggression and anger. (IN PERSON ONLY)
On the second day, June 14, we will gather with Dungse Rinpoche and Acharya Choying Gyurmey to celebrate HH the 17th Karmapa, Orgyen Tringley Dorje’s 42nd birthday in the morning, and, as this is a Protector Day, we will perform the Mahakala puja in the afternoon.
During the celebration of HH Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje’s birthday, we will offer a Mandala, representing the complete surrender of our ego and the offering of the entire universe to spiritual teachers and enlightened beings. This will be followed by the traditional offerings of khatas (white scarves), yellow rice and butter tea, and the recitation of the Guru Yoga and Calling the Lama from Afar sadhana. We will conclude with a Lamp Offering and then share and enjoy the Birthday Cake.
Through the Mahakala puja, we invoke Mahakala Bernagchen, a Bodhisattva whose wrathful manifestation is an expression of skillful means to subdue harmful forces affecting beings, personally and globally.
